SYMPTOMSThe Remove button in the Format Bullets and Numbering dialog box may be unavailable (dimmed) after you remove Multilevel numbering from a table. This means you cannot remove other numbering formatting from the table unless you use the Numbering button on the Standard toolbar. CAUSE
This behavior occurs only if you remove the Multilevel numbering from the
first column of the table. Specifically, the Remove button is unavailable
if you select any column other than column 1 or if you select a single
cell. By contrast, the Remove button is available if you position the
insertion point in a single cell (but do not select anything) in any column
other than column 1.
WORKAROUNDIf the Remove button becomes unavailable, as described above, use the Numbering button on the Standard toolbar to remove any additional numbering formatting from your table. STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 97 for Windows and Word 98 Macintosh Edition.
