Opening Word Doc in NT File Manager: Cannot Find <filename.exe>

ID: Q122207

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows NT, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

When you double-click a Microsoft Word document in Windows NT File Manager, the following error message is displayed:

Cannot find <xxxx>.exe.
This program is needed to run files with extension 'DOC.'

CAUSE

This problem occurs when Word for Windows NT is installed in a directory that contains one or more spaces in its name (for example, "C:\Word for Windows NT"). You may also experience problems with OLE functionality when your directory name contains spaces.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Word version 6.0 for Windows NT. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

RESOLUTION

Use one of the following methods to correct this problem:

  • When you are using OLE functions, reinstall Word in a directory that contains no spaces.

  • -or-

  • If you are not using OLE functions, you can use the following steps to modify your document's association with Word:
    1. Open the Windows NT File Manager.

    2. Locate and select a Word document or template (*.DOC or *.DOT).

    3. From the File menu, choose the Associate command.

    4. Choose the Change Type button.

    5. Edit the Command setting to include quotation marks around the path referencing WINWORD.EXE. For example, the default setting

               c:\winword\winword.exe /w
      should be changed to:

               "c:\winword\winword.exe" /w

    6. Choose the OK button.

    7. Choose the Close button.

Word documents and templates can now be opened in File Manager. Please note, however, that due to a limitation in Windows NT version 3.5, Word for Windows NT cannot be used as an OLE server unless it is already running.
