Dialog Boxes Don't Display Eastern European Characters

ID: Q122229

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c

SYMPTOMS

When you are using the U.S. English version of Word for Windows, Eastern European special extended characters do not display in dialog boxes.

CAUSE

The version of DIALOG.FON that ships with U.S. English Word for Windows does not support Eastern European extended characters from 127-159 in the U.S. code page 437. This means that dialog boxes, such as the Spelling dialog box, are affected. For example, if you to use the Polish spell checker with U.S. English Word for Windows, special extended characters for the Polish language (from 127-159) are not displayed in the Suggestions dialog box when the U.S. English version of DIALOG.FON is being used.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Word versions 6.0, 6.0a, and 6.0c for Windows. This problem was corrected in Word version 7.0 for Windows 95.

MORE INFORMATION

By default, Word for Windows uses the font file DIALOG.FON to generate the characters in both internal and user-defined dialog boxes. This file is shipped with Word 6.0 and is the only font supported by Microsoft for use in Word dialog boxes. By default, this font is located in the Word program directory.

DIALOG.FON was specifically designed to display text attractively in Word dialog boxes at a variety of screen resolutions. The DIALOG.FON font provides a rich extended character set.

NOTE: If the DIALOG.FON font is deleted or becomes otherwise unavailable, Word attempts to substitute the MS Sans Serif screen font(SSERIFE.FON).

Microsoft does not support the use of third-party fonts in Word for Windows dialog boxes.

Microsoft does not support substituting a foreign version of DIALOG.FON in U.S. English Word for Windows and cannot guarantee the performance of this action.
