"Insufficient memory..." Editing Embedded MS Excel 5.0 Chart

ID: Q123289

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c

SYMPTOMS

In a Word for Windows document, if you double-click an embedded Microsoft Excel 5.0 Chart object to edit it in place ("in situ"), the following error message may occur:

Word has insufficient memory. You will not be able to undo this action once it is completed. Do you want to continue?
This error message is incorrect, because usually no low-memory condition exists. Regardless of whether you choose Yes or No in the error message dialog box, Word opens the embedded chart object for editing in place.

This does not happen if you open the chart object in a separate window instead of editing it in place. (To open the chart object in a separate window, select it and then choose Chart Object from the Edit menu. From the menu that appears, choose Open.)

This behavior occurs even if you have ample memory. It does not happen in Word 6.0 for the Macintosh, Word 6.0 for Windows NT (32-bit Word), in Windows 3.1 Write, or in Microsoft Publisher.
