Temp Files Left Behind After Closing Internet Assistant

ID: Q128579

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Assistant for Word, versions 1.0, 1.0z, 2.0z
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0a, 6.0c

SYMPTOMS

Temporary (temp) files remain on your hard drive after you close Internet Assistant and exit Windows.

CAUSE

Temp files may remain for one of the following reasons:

  • You were using Internet Assistant to download files using the FTP protocol. By design, Word stores these files as temp files. If the files are zipped files, you will get a packager object in your HTML document, with a caption such as the following:
    ~wia0000.zip
    Right Click to Edit
If you are downloading documents, the documents will appear in your temp directory as
    ~wia0000.doc
    ~wia0000.htm

  • Internet Assistant creates temp files to keep track and store the contents of files and images as it is opening and browsing the Internet. After some browsing sessions, temp files may remain.

RESOLUTION

Exit Windows and delete any unnecessary temp files.

To save FTP files, do the following:

  1. Click the right mouse button over the embedded object.

  2. Choose Save As.

  3. Type the location and name of your file.

  4. Choose OK.
