WD6: Some Servers Fail to Respond to Internet Assistant

ID: Q128836

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Assistant for Word, version 1.0
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0a, 6.0c

CASE 1

SYMPTOMS

Nothing happens when you attempt to open a URL using the following syntax:

http://www.microsoft.com
When you try to open a Uniform Resource Locator (URL), the progress meter continuously displays 0 (zero) percent.

CAUSE

You may be trying to connect to a server that is not responding or that has an older version of server software.

RESOLUTIONS

Method 1: Add an extra slash to the end of the URL. This server may require an extra slash mark:

http://www.microsoft.com/
Method 2: Try the IP address instead of the URL. The Domain Name Server you are using may not have the URL registered properly. For example, try the following to connect via IP address to Microsoft's Home Page:
http://198.105.232.5
Method 3: Try another Web Page in Internet Assistant. If this fails, try in another browser like Netscape or Mosaic. If this fails, you may have a problem with your Internet connection, your dialup configuration, or your Internet Service provider. See your network administrator for more information.

CASE 2

Your Trumpet Dialer or other Internet connectivity software may not be configured or working correctly.

RESOLUTION

Open your TCPMAN.EXE (or other Trumpet Dialer) and configure it so that "Van Jacobson CSLIP compression" is set to active.

If you are using other Internet connectivity software, please contact your Internet Service Provider or your system administrator to verify the settings you need to establish this connection.
