IA: TOC, Index, IncludeText Fields Merge into One Paragraph

ID: Q129273

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Assistant for Word, versions 1.0, 1.0z, 2.0, 2.0z
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for Windows NT, version 6.0
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, version 7.0

SYMPTOMS

Text that is the result of any of the following fields is combined into one unformatted field when you save a Word document as HyperText Markup Language (HTML):

  • IncludeText

  • Index

  • TOC (Table of Contents)

Paragraph marks and tabs disappear, and the result of the field is now a single large paragraph. Instead of showing the formatting it had when it was in a Word document, it now shows the formatting of the Normal style.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Internet Assistant listed above. Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

Unlink the field before saving the document as HTML. To unlink the field, move the insertion point anywhere in the field result, and press CTRL+SHIFT+F9. Note that unlinking the field prevents it from being updated. If you want to retain the ability to update the field in the Word document, save the document before unlinking the field. Then unlink the field and save as HTML.
