ID: Q130256

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Assistant for Word, versions 1.0, 1.0z
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0a, 6.0c

SYMPTOMS

Your HTML document opens as text only when all of the following conditions are true:

  • One or more users already have the document open.

  • The Confirm Conversions check box is not selected.

  • You choose OK to make a copy of the document.

If you are using Windows NT, you may also get a message indicating that the 32-bit converter cannot be opened before the document opens as text only.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Internet Assistant for Word, versions 1.0 and 1.0z. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

To ensure your HTML document does not open as text only, do the following:

  1. From the File menu, choose Open.

  2. Make sure the Confirm Conversions check box is selected (checked).

  3. In the Confirm Conversions dialog box, select Hypertext Markup Language.

  4. Choose OK.

MORE INFORMATION

When a document is currently open by another user, Word will display the following prompt:

<path>\<filename.ext> is being used by <user name>. Do you want to make a copy?
You can choose OK to open a read-only copy of the document. If Confirm Conversions is not selected, any HTML document will open as text.
