The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c

SUMMARY

The following is a summary of corrections and enhancements made to the WordPerfect converter and supporting components supplied with the Word 6.0 for Windows Supplemental WordPerfect 5.x/6.0 Converter Kit. This converter is used to convert between Word and WordPerfect 5.0 and 5.1 for MS-DOS and WordPerfect 5.1 and 5.2 for Windows file formats.

All corrections and enhancements listed here have been made since the immediately previous Word 6.0c product release.

CORRECTIONS AND ENHANCEMENTS

Indentation

A significant number of causes for incorrect indentation when importing WordPerfect documents have been resolved. Corrections have been made to the application of hanging and normal indentation in footnotes, indexes, tables of contents, numbered paragraphs, and normal document body text.

Paragraph Numbering

A significant number of paragraph numbering import problems have been addressed by emulating WordPerfect [Par Num] numbering with Sequence fields instead of heading numbering or multilevel lists. Previous problems resulted from numbering model differences in the two products. Issues addressed include:

  • Paragraph numbering sequence restart ignored (for example, a numbering change from 109 to 201 instead converting to 109, 110,...)

  • Loss of text preceding paragraph numbers

  • Skipped (missing) numbers in a numbering sequence

Character Mapping

Two enhancements have been made to allow retention of a greater number of WordPerfect characters when importing a WordPerfect 5.x document:

  • Several TrueType fonts that contain equivalents for WordPerfect special (compose) characters are supplied and installed with the updated converter, and the converter has been optimized to detect and take advantage of these fonts. These fonts include:

  • Greek Symbols
    Iconic Symbols Ext
    Math Ext
    Multinational Ext
    Typographic Ext
  • If the TrueType special character fonts supplied with WordPerfect 6.0 and 6.1 for Windows are installed on your system, the updated WordPerfect converter will detect and use them to preserve all of the special characters they provide. These fonts include:

  • WP Arabic Sihafa
    WP ArabicScript Sihafa
    WP BoxDrawing
    WP CyrillicA
    WP CyrillicB
    WP Greek Century
    WP Greek Courier
    WP Greek Helvetica
    WP Hebrew David
    WP IconicSymbolsA
    WP IconicSymbolsB
    WP Japanese
    WP MathA
    WP MathB
    WP MathExtendedA
    WP MathExtendedB
    WP MultinationalA Courier
    WP MultinationalA Helvetica
    WP MultinationalA Roman
    WP MultinationalB Courier
    WP MultinationalB Helvetica
    WP MultinationalB Roman
    WP Phonetic
    WP TypographicSymbols

WPG Graphics Import

The WPG graphic import filter has been updated to provide support for WPG versions 1.0, 1.0a, and 2.0. In addition, a variety of causes for the following problems have been addressed:

  • General protection (GP) faults

  • "Not Enough Memory to Display or Print Picture" errors

  • "Unable to Convert Graphic" errors

  • "Out of Memory" errors

  • Shading reversal

  • Missing pictures

  • Loss of fill patterns

  • Loss of colors

  • Incorrect font mapping

  • Text loss

  • Image sizing, cropping, and scaling problems

"Cannot Find the Graphic File..." for Available Graphics

When you open a WordPerfect document containing a link to a graphic on disk, Word will no longer return the following error message when that graphic is actually available in the directory specified by the link:
"Cannot find the graphic file specified by the document."

Hard Row (Page Break in Table) Ignored

If a WordPerfect table contains a hard page break (represented in WordPerfect Reveal Codes by the [Hrd Row] command), the page break is no longer ignored.

All Endnote Numbers Lost

When a WordPerfect document containing a corrupt Endnote Option ([End Opt]) code is opened in Word, endnote numbers in the document body are no longer lost.

General Protection Faults

Several causes for general protection (GP) faults when importing WordPerfect 5.x documents have been addressed. Among other more isolated causes, the following scenarios will no longer generate a fault:

  • An endnote entry immediately followed by a table of contents entry. For example:

  • [Endnote:1;[Note Num]text][Mark:ToC,1]text[End Mark:ToC,1]
  • An attempt by the converter to embed a Sequence field within a TC field.
