IA: Hyperlinks Do Not Work If You Are Running Windows NT 3.51

• Microsoft Internet Assistant for Word, versions 1.0, 1.0z
• Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0a, 6.0c
• Microsoft Windows NT 3.51

SYMPTOMS

When you use Internet Assistant and the Windows NT 3.51 operating system, you cannot create a hyperlink to a linked document.

Note, however, that you can jump to hyperlinks within the same HTML document. Note also that this problem does not occur if you are using Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Windows 3.x, or Windows for Workgroups.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use any of the following methods.

Method 1:

Install HTTP services on the computer you are using to store the HTML files. HTTP services are supplied with the Microsoft Windows NT Resource Kit. To install HTTP services, do the following:

1. Install the Microsoft Windows NT Resource Kit.



2. Locate and copy the Http.exe file to your Windows NT folder (directory).



3. Locate and copy the Http.cpl file to the Windows NT\System32 folder.



4. From the command line, run Http.exe to install HTTP services.



5. Restart Windows NT.



6. Double-click the Control Panel icon in the Main group.



7. Double-click the HTTP services icon and specify your configuration.

NOTE: Configure HTTP services to start automatically in the Services icon in Control Panel.

To browse the HTML documents using Internet Assistant, click Browse Web on the File menu, click the URL button on the Formatting toolbar, and then specify the URL as

http://<your computer name>

where <your computer name> is the name of your computer. Windows NT will look for a file called Default.htm in the default HTTP server folder.

If you are using Word for Windows NT or Word for Windows 95, version 7.0, upgrade to Internet Assistant, version 2.0z. This version of Internet Assistant is available as a beta release at the following URL:

http://www.microsoft.com/msoffice/freestuf/msword/download/ia/default.htm

If the documents are on your local hard disk, place them in the root directory on your hard disk (C). Also place the graphics in the root directory.

NOTE: The root directory must be C. Another root directory, such as D, will not work.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Internet Assistant for Word, versions 1.0 and 1.0z, when you use Windows NT 3.51. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
