SYMPTOMS
When you edit a footnote of a subdocument while you are in master document
view, the changes you make are not retained, even though the status bar
indicates that the documents were saved. This problem does not occur when
you insert a footnote; it occurs only when you edit the footnote.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Word listed at the top of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 97 for Windows. WORKAROUND
To retain changes you make to footnotes within your subdocuments, use one
of the following workarounds.
If you are in the master document, do the following:Method 2: Open the subdocument outside of the master document, edit the footnote, and then save and close the subdocument.
