WD: TOC Resets Page Numbers to 1 When Opened in Page Layout View

ID: Q144924

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Word for Windows NT, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

When you open a master document in Page Layout view, page numbers in the table of contents page may be reset to one.

This problem does not occur when you open the master document in Normal view, Outline view, or Master Document view.

WORKAROUND

Method 1: Don't Open in Page Layout View

Open the Master Document in a view other than Page Layout view. The table of contents will reflect the page numbers as expected.

Method 2: Lock the Table of Contents

Select the table of contents, and then press CTRL+F11 or CTRL+3. This will prevent the TOC field from being updated and will allow you to view your document in Page Layout view.

NOTE: If you make a change in your document and you need to update your table of contents, select the table of contents and press CTRL+SHFT+F11 or CTRL+4. This will unlock the TOC field so it can be updated.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the product versions listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 97 for Windows.
