When you open a master document in Page Layout view, page numbers in the
table of contents page may be reset to one.
WORKAROUNDMethod 1: Don't Open in Page Layout ViewOpen the Master Document in a view other than Page Layout view. The table of contents will reflect the page numbers as expected.Method 2: Lock the Table of ContentsSelect the table of contents, and then press CTRL+F11 or CTRL+3. This will prevent the TOC field from being updated and will allow you to view your document in Page Layout view.NOTE: If you make a change in your document and you need to update your table of contents, select the table of contents and press CTRL+SHFT+F11 or CTRL+4. This will unlock the TOC field so it can be updated. STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the product versions listed at the beginning of this article.
