WD95: AutoCorrect Expanded Text Includes Text from Other Entries

ID: Q145147

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a

SYMPTOMS

When you press ENTER after you type a word that is stored in your AutoCorrect list, it expands to include text from another AutoCorrect entry. Symptoms of this include duplicates words or different text appearing in the expanded AutoCorrect text.

In contrast, when you press the SPACEBAR after you type the AutoCorrect text, the AutoCorrect text expands correctly.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when both of the following are true:

  • Any part of the text in the Replace box also has its own separate AutoCorrect entry.

    -and-

  • The second AutoCorrect entry appears after the first AutoCorrect entry, alphabetically.

For example, this problem occurs when you create the following two AutoCorrect entries:

   myaddress 123 Winesap Street
   Winesap Apple
When you type myaddress and press ENTER, the AutoCorrect text expands to

   123 Apple Street
instead of this:

   123 Winesap Street
In this example, Winesap is also expanded when you press ENTER. Winesap does not expand if you press the SPACEBAR.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, choose one of the following methods:

Method 1.

Press the SPACEBAR after you type the AutoCorrect text instead of pressing Enter.
Method 2.
Change the name of the AutoCorrect entry whose name is identical to text used within another AutoCorrect entry.
Method 3.
Store the text as an AutoText entry (Edit menu) instead of using AutoCorrect.

STATUS

This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 97 for Windows.
