WD: Excel Object Range Name Changes Format After Paste Link

ID: Q146900

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for Windows NT, version 6.0
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.1a

SYMPTOMS

When you paste link a Microsoft Excel object into a Word document, the range name changes to cell reference (CxRx) format. This problem occurs when you select the object in Excel and use the Copy Picture command. (The Copy Picture command is available when you hold the SHIFT key and click the Edit menu in Excel.)

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use the Copy command instead of the Copy Picture command in Excel. The drawback to using this method is that an embedded chart is not copied as part of the link. An embedded chart is available only when you use the Copy Picture command.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed above.
