IA: Automatic Numbered, Bulleted Lists Don't Behave Like Word

ID: Q147330

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Assistant for Word, version 2.0z
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Word for Windows NT, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

When you create a bulleted or numbered list using Internet Assistant, the Bullets and Numbering buttons on the Formatting toolbar do not display.

When you click the Bullets or Numbering button to turn off the formatting, the formatting is not turned off.

In addition, in Windows 95, when you press the Enter key twice to return to normal formatting, the bullets or numbering do not display in your text. However, when you save, close, and reopen your document, these lines have bullets or numbers.

CAUSE

In Internet Assistant, the Bullets and Numbering buttons apply a style to your text. You can not toggle this formatting on or off. When your document is saved as HTML, the style is converted to either the <UL> or <OL> HTML elements. This behavior is by design.

WORKAROUND

Apply the Normal,P style to items that you do not want to have numbered or bulleted. When you save your document as HTML, the <P> tag is applied to this text.
