WD: Turning Off Numbering Does Not Switch to Normal Style

ID: Q165254

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

If you define a style to include bullets or numbering, and then turn off bullets or numbering by typing two paragraph marks in a row (pressing ENTER twice), the style does not change to the Normal style.

CAUSE

When you turn off bullets or numbering this way, you are applying "no bullets or numbers" as direct formatting to the paragraph. That is, you are not changing the style to Normal.

MORE INFORMATION

To turn off bulleting or numbering for a particular list, use any of the following methods:

  • Click the Bullets or Numbering buttons on the Formatting toolbar.

  • Type two paragraphs in a row (press ENTER twice).

  • From the Bullets And Numbering dialog box, click None or Remove.

  • Use the BACKSPACE key to delete the bullet or number.

  • Right-click the list item and click Stop Numbering or Skip Numbering on the shortcut menu.

After turning off the bulleting or numbering, the paragraph will still be the same style as before, only without bulleting or numbering. If bulleting or numbering is defined as part of the style, and you manually turn it off using one of the methods mentioned above, Word will directly format the paragraph as 'not numbered,' overriding the style formatting.

To reset the paragraph to the style, press CTRL+Q on the keyboard. This will strip the direct paragraph formatting and bring back the bullet or number. Or, you can turn the bullet or numbering back on by doing any one of the following:

  • Click the Bullets or Numbering buttons on the Formatting toolbar.

  • From the Bullets And Numbering dialog box, click the scheme you want to apply.
