WD: Picture Sizes Differently in Word and Photo Editor

ID: Q173111

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Photo Editor 97

SYMPTOMS

When you look at the size of a picture size when opened in Microsoft Photo Editor and then look at the same picture in Microsoft Word, the sizes will be different.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Microsoft Windows 95 has a screen DPI (Dots per inch) of 96 pixels per inch. Windows retains the number of pixels high and pixels wide of the image rather its described height and width. Microsoft Photo Editor changes the size of the picture when you change the pixel depth but it does not change the number of pixels. Microsoft Word ignores the pixel depth and therefore assumes it is the fixed value as defined by the Windows.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

A computer program designed specifically for graphics or page layout will look at the size of the picture, will preserve the size, and then will save print information based on that size.
