SYMPTOMS

When you access the address book or use the Send command on the File menu, Microsoft Word stops responding. This problem occurs in Word 7.x when you are running Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3.

To access the address book in Word, do any of the following:

  • On the Tools menu, click Envelopes And Labels, and then click the Address Book button.

  • Click the Address Book button on the Standard toolbar.

  • Use the Mail Merge Wizard and choose the address book as a data source.

CAUSE

Service Pack 3 for Windows NT version 4.0 installs a new version of the Mapi32.dll dynamic-link library that is not compatible with Word version 7.x.

RESOLUTION

This problem does not occur with Word 97 if you have Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3 installed. To resolve this problem, install Microsoft Word 97 for Windows.
