SUMMARY

This article describes how to change the format (such as font or font size) of automatic page numbers.

NOTE: Automatic page numbers do not include numbers applied in a header or footer.

MORE INFORMATION

Use the appropriate method for your version of Word.

Word for Windows

Follow these steps:

  1. On the Format menu, click Style.

  2. In the List box, click All Styles.

  3. Select Page Number from the Styles box and click Modify.

  4. Click the Format button and select Font.

  5. Select the Font tab and select the desired font, style and size. Click OK.

If the formatting for the Page Number style is to be used as the default for newly created documents, then click to select the Add To Template check box in the lower-left corner of the Modify Styles dialog box and then click OK.

  6. Click the Close button in the Style dialog box.

Word for the Macintosh

Follow these steps:
  1. On the Format menu, click Define Style (Styles in Word 3.x and 4.0). If you haven't already applied automatic page numbering, hold down the SHIFT key when you choose Define Styles. (This procedure will cause the command to appear as Define All Styles on the Format menu in Word 4.0, though the dialog box will be named Define Styles.)

  2. Select the Page Number style.

  3. Select the appropriate formatting from the Font or Format menus (including formatting within the Character and Paragraph dialog boxes) or the ruler. The new formats will be depicted below the style name in the Define Style dialog box.

  4. Click Define, or, if you want automatic page numbering to appear in this style for any new document you create from now on as well, click Use As Default (Set Default in Word 3.x and 4.0).

  5. Click Cancel to close the dialog box. If you click OK, the dialog box will close and the page number style will be applied to the current paragraph.
