Word Is Slow in Updating the Screen

SUMMARY

If Word is slow in updating the screen, or in letting you select text and scroll using the mouse, turn off the screen line number feature on the Options command menu by setting the "line numbers:" field to No. The routine that calculates the line position slows down the speed at which you can move about in the document. Disabling this feature will speed up screen updates, as well as accelerate search and replace operations.

In Word versions 5.5, 6.0, line numbers can be suppressed in View Preferences, (ALT, V, E). Within the Preferences dialog box, press ALT+N to remove the check mark in the "Show Line Numbers" option.
