Applying a Style Overrides Existing Paragraph Formatting

ID: Q35571

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c

If a Style is applied to a paragraph that contains manual paragraph formatting, the manual paragraph formatting will be removed, leaving only the paragraph formatting defined in the Style.

For example, if a paragraph is formatted by setting the indents, tabs, and justification on the Ruler, and a Style is then applied, the formatting applied on the Ruler will be lost.

This loss of formatting occurs by product design. This functionality is different than what occurs for manual character formatting.
