Printing to Apple LaserWriter NT/NTX on Novell Network

ID: Q37985

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for MS-DOS, versions 4.0, 5.0, 5.5

SUMMARY

You will have problems printing from Microsoft Word to Apple LaserWriter NT/NTX printers on a Novell network if your setup is incorrect. The Apple "LaserWriter NT/NTX Owner's Guide" incorrectly states that the printer uses 96 baud, XON/XOFF handshake, and 7 databits in its communications protocol. This information is incorrect.

The LaserWriter NTX does not use XON/XOFF, and it uses 8 databits and a baud rate of 9600. Novell has reported that printing across the Novell network from Word is not a problem if the settings below are used.

This information applies to Microsoft Word for MS-DOS versions 4.0, 5.0, and 5.5.

MORE INFORMATION

If you are using Novell NetWare version 2.1 or later, do the following:

  1. Use the Custom Installation of the NETGEN process under Printer Maintenance (a Novell utility) to set XON/XOFF to No, the baud rate to 9600, parity to none, databits to 8, and the stopbit to 1.

  2. Set the Tabs and Banner flags to No in the CAPTURE statement (Novell command).

If you are using a Novell NetWare version earlier than version 2.1, do the following:

  1. Specify the serial-mode settings in Option 7 of the system Install program. Set the baud rate to 9600, parity to none, databits to 8, and the stopbit to 1.

  2. Set Tabs and Banner flags to No in the SPOOL statement.

For more information, refer to Novell's "Command Line Utility Manual" or contact Novell product support at (800) 638-9273.
