Novell Network Broadcast Messages and Word

ID: Q44484

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for MS-DOS, versions 4.0, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0

SUMMARY

Broadcast messages can be sent across the Novell network system to one or more persons and/or one or more groups. These broadcast messages appear at the bottom of your workstation screen and may overwrite a portion of the screen used by another application. Press CTRL+ENTER to remove the message from your screen. Normally, this also restores your screen.

In Word for DOS version 4.0, a message sent across a Novell network does not pop up during a Word session. After you quit Word, the message line appears at the bottom of the screen. This is a limitation of the Word program.

In Word for DOS versions 5.0 and 5.5, the broadcast message does pop up during a Word session on line 24 if you are in text mode. If you use Word in graphics mode, the message does not appear until you toggle into text mode or you quit Word. If you are using a Hercules graphics card and a broadcast message is received, the screen becomes corrupt if you use the Options menu to change the display mode. When possible, press ALT+F9 to switch from graphics mode to text mode. The broadcast message is still readable.

To restore the Word screen after removing the broadcast message or changing the display mode, press CTRL+SHIFT+\. This key sequence forces Word to redraw the screen.
