ID: Q48110

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c

SUMMARY

During editing, if you select a section of text and then press the DEL key on the numeric keypad, the deleted section is NOT copied to the Clipboard. If you want the deleted section to end up on the Clipboard, hold down the SHIFT key, then press the DEL key. In Word for Windows version 2.0, you can also press CTRL+X to delete the selection to the Clipboard.

Immediately after you delete a section of a document, you still can retrieve the deletion by using one of the following methods:

  1. From the Edit menu, choose the Undo Edit Clear command.

  2. Hold down the ALT key and press the BACKSPACE key. In Word for Windows version 2.0, you can also press CTRL+Z to access the Undo Edit Clear command.

Note that the Undo Edit Clear command retrieves the most-recent deletion. For example, if you delete the word "frog" and then delete "little", the Undo Edit Clear command will retrieve "little". It will not retrieve "frog".
