Incorrect Hanging Indent After Two Manual Page Breaks

ID: Q61073

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c

SUMMARY

If a hanging indent comes after two manual page breaks, the first line of the paragraph will be even with the body of the paragraph (it will not "hang"). The following example demonstrates the problem (the dashed lines represent the page breaks; <CR> represents the paragraph mark):

MORE INFORMATION

A workaround to display the correct hanging indent is as follows:

  1. Press CTRL+ENTER to enter the first page break.

  2. Press ENTER.

  3. Press CTRL+ENTER to enter the second page break.

Note: You must perform these steps exactly as stated; if you put the insertion point between the two page breaks after they have been entered and press ENTER, the problem will not be corrected.

Another workaround is to use two section breaks:
  1. Select Insert.

  2. Select Break.

  3. Select Next Page under Section Break instead of using page breaks.

Repeat the above steps for the second section break.
