Word: Can't Print or Save Files on Novell Network

ID: Q66069

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for MS-DOS, versions 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 5.5

SUMMARY

If the Novell network has reached its directory limit, customers running Microsoft Word on the Novell network cannot print or save files. This information applies to Word for MS-DOS versions 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, and 5.5.

To determine how many directory entries are still available, do the following:

  1. Log in as SUPERVISOR. This will require knowing the supervisor password.

  2. Enter FCONSOLE to run the menu-driven program that reports information about the file system.

  3. From the Main menu, choose Statistics.

  4. Choose Volume Information.

  5. Select the volume to view.

  6. In the following screen of information, look for an entry that reads "Current Free Directory Entries." This shows how many directory entries can still be created on that particular volume.

If the Current Free Directory Entries field is near 0 (zero), part of the network will need to be reinstalled to increase the number of directory entries that can be created. For information concerning reinstalling a portion of the network, contact Novell Technical Support at (800) 638-9273 or refer to the Novell network documentation.

MORE INFORMATION

Upon installation of Novell networks, the network requires the network administrator to stipulate the number of directory entries needed. Whenever that limit is reached, functions such as printing and saving files, granting trustee rights, and creating directories will no longer be allowed by the network.

Routine deletion of any unnecessary files will reduce the possibility of needing to increase the amount of directory entries on the volume. Directories, subdirectories, files, and trustee rights all qualify as directories to the Novell network software.
