Word: Text or ASCII File Not Recognized Using Insert File

ID: Q67432

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for MS-DOS, version 5.x

SUMMARY

Text (ASCII) files can be imported into Word 5.50 documents using the Insert File command. Because these ASCII files do not have a consistent header that Word can recognize, the following error message will result if you insert an ASCII file (Insert File command):

Word does not recognize the format of that file. Do you still wish to insert the file?
Select the OK button to confirm the insertion of the text file into the document. The error message does not mean that the file will be imported incorrectly into the open Word document.

If no other action has been performed on the document since the Insert File command was executed, any file that is accidentally imported into a document can be removed from the open document by choosing Edit Undo.

MORE INFORMATION

The Insert File command can be used to import text (ASCII) files, spreadsheet data, and word processor files that have been saved in rich text format (RTF). For more information, see Chapter 27, "Spreadsheet or Document Linking" in the "Using Microsoft Word" version 5.50 manual.

The Insert File command should not be used to import graphics files because Word will not be able to recognize a graphics file to import it correctly. From the Insert menu, choose Picture to import a graphics file into a Word document. For more information on importing graphics, see Chapter 20, "Layout Features for Graphics and Text," in the "Using Microsoft Word" version 5.50 manual.
