Word 5.5: Updating the Mouse Driver with Setup

SUMMARY

The Microsoft Word for MS-DOS version 5.5 Setup program will install MOUSE.SYS version 7.05 by modifying the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files if you select the "Update the mouse driver" and "Update system files" options.

If an earlier MOUSE.SYS driver is currently installed in the CONFIG.SYS file, the existing MOUSE.SYS driver will be renamed to MOUSE.OLD, and Setup will copy the new mouse driver to the same location specified in the existing DEVICE=[path]\MOUSE.SYS statement.

Any command line parameters (for example, DEVICE=MOUSE.SYS /Y) specified in the DEVICE=[path]\MOUSE.SYS statement will also be used with the new driver.

If no previous DEVICE=[path]\MOUSE.SYS statement exists in the CONFIG.SYS file, Setup will copy the MOUSE.SYS driver to the root directory of the boot disk, and add the line DEVICE=MOUSE.SYS to the CONFIG.SYS file.

If MOUSE.COM was loaded from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file to control the mouse and you select the "Update the mouse driver" option, Setup will remove the statement containing the string "MOUSE.COM" from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. This is done to prevent a conflict between MOUSE.COM and MOUSE.SYS. Only one of these programs should be installed into memory at one time.

Setup will not pass any command line parameters specified in the MOUSE.COM statement in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file to the DEVICE=[path]\MOUSE.SYS statement in the CONFIG.SYS file.

Setup preserves the contents of the original AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files by renaming them to AUTOEXEC.OLD and CONFIG.OLD. If MOUSE.COM was used previously with a Microsoft compatible mouse and problems arise after updating to the MOUSE.SYS driver, check the AUTOEXEC.OLD file for any command line parameters. It may be necessary to add these parameters to the end of the DEVICE=[path]\MOUSE.SYS statement in the CONFIG.SYS file.
