Word: Locating Recovered Autosave Files

ID: Q70962

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for MS-DOS, versions 5.0, 5.5, 6.0

SUMMARY

If you run Microsoft Word for MS-DOS version 5.0 on a stand-alone computer (no network), Word places any recovered autosave files in the disk and directory path where the Word program files reside.

If you run Word 5.0 on a network and the SET MSWNET variable is active, Word places recovered autosave files in the drive and directory path specified by the SET MSWNET variable.

If you run Word version 5.5 on a stand-alone computer, Word places any recovered autosave files in the same disk directory on the hard drive from which the original file(s) were opened. If the document was retrieved from a floppy, the recovered autosave files are saved to the Word directory or where the .INI file is stored.

If you run Word 5.5 on a network and the SET MSWNET55 variable is active, Word attempts to recover any autosave files in the following locations and in the following order:

  1. The original directory from which the file(s) were opened.

  2. The drive and directory specified by the SET MSWNET55 variable, if the original drive and directory path does not exist, or if the file is read-only.

  3. The Word 5.5 program directory, if the SET MSWNET55 variable does not exist. If the file being restored already exists, it will be copied to disk with a .BAK extension. If the file being recovered is open, the recovered autosave file replaces the old file in the active window.
