Floppy Disk Corrupted After "Disk Full" Message

ID: Q71370

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for MS-DOS, versions 5.5, 6.0

SUMMARY

When the error message "Document Disk Full" appears on the screen, you should select OK BEFORE placing a new floppy disk in the drive.

If the disks are switched before selecting OK, Word will be unable to locate the TMP file that was being used to save the document. At this point, you can either choose to Retry or Cancel access to the TMP file. Place the original disk back into the drive and select Retry to have Word return to the document screen.

If the original disk is not placed back into the drive and you choose Cancel, Word will report a disk error. An open file has been left on the original disk and the DOC and BAK files will have been deleted. Also, there may be allocation errors caused by the open file and some or all of the files on the disk may not be recoverable.

The correct procedure for saving a file after receiving a "Document Disk Full" error message is described on pages 222-223 of the "Using Microsoft Word" manual. See the section titled "Managing Disk Space and Memory," pages 220-223, for additional information concerning Word's use of TMP files and disk space.
