Word 5.5: Cannot Run from Network After Running Setup Network

ID: Q73815

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for MS-DOS, version 5.5

SUMMARY

Microsoft Word version 5.5 will not be able to run correctly from a network workstation if you have done the following to install Word 5.5 for workstation use:

  1. The Word 5.5 program files have been copied to a network file server using the Set Up Network option.

  2. A user on a network workstation ran SETUP.EXE from the network file server with the Setup User option.

As a result of doing the above steps, the following errors will be present in the network configuration of Word 5.5:

  • A built WORD.EXE program file that can be executed from network workstations will not be present on the network file server.

  • The directory path added to the end of the PATH statement in the AUTOEXEC.BAT will be incorrect.

These errors may result in the display of the error message "Bad command or filename" when a user on the network workstation tries to start Word.

To correctly install Word 5.5 for a network, run Setup from the network file server and choose to install on a network. Connect to the network file server, then run the Setup User program from the network workstation.
