Word 5.0: Footnotes Cause Unexpected Page Breaks

ID: Q76120

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for MS-DOS, version 5.0

SUMMARY

If you print footnotes on the same page as the footnote reference marks, Word for DOS version 5.0 places a page break in the document where there appears to be enough room to accommodate more text and the additional footnote text. This problem occurs if you format the footnote text with the "keep together" option in the Format Paragraph command.

Normally, if there is not enough room at the bottom of the page for additional footnote text, Word wraps the footnote text to the next page. If the footnote text is formatted for "keep together," Word moves the entire footnote to a new page instead of breaking the footnote. This can cause unexpected pagination because Word assumes there is not enough room on the page for the entire footnote. Word then moves the footnote reference mark to a new page to accommodate the footnote text instead of increasing the amount of space for the footnote text.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for DOS version 5.0. This problem was corrected in Word for DOS version 5.5.
