Word: SAVE Prompt Doesn't Disappear After Autosave Occurs

ID: Q76605

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for MS-DOS, versions 5.0, 5.5, 6.0

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Word for DOS versions 5.0 and 5.5, if you activate the Autosave feature and the "SAVE" prompt appears in the status bar, Word automatically performs an autosave of all currently opened files (documents, style sheets, and glossaries) that have been modified since the last autosave occurred. However, the "SAVE" prompt in the status bar may not disappear after the autosave has been completed, because the amount of space available in a .TMP file created by Word may be low.

To make the "SAVE" prompt disappear, save all open files with the File Save All command in Word 5.5 or the Transfer Allsave command in Word 5.0. Close all open files with the File Close All command in Word 5.5 or the Transfer Clear All command in Word 5.0. This causes Word to close its large .TMP files because the information stored in them is saved to disk within the new files.

If you continue to edit your files without saving them, Word will not perform the next autosave until the next autosave interval has expired. Edits made to the files after the initial "SAVE" prompt and subsequent autosaves can be lost if Word cannot save edits because the .TMP file is full.
