-
Microsoft Word for MS-DOS, versions 4.0, 5.0, 5.5
SUMMARY
Because Microsoft Word for DOS versions 4.0, 5.0, and 5.5 can produce
a table of contents from a single letter code, it is possible to
create multiple table of contents within a single document that have
different page numbering schemes. This is helpful if a document
consists of more than one chapter or section and each chapter or
section starts numbering its pages at 1.
For example, you can create the following table of contents:
Setting Up
Overview 1-1
Using SETUP.EXE 1-2
Customizing Word 1-5
Using Word
Getting Started 2-1
Creating or Loading a Document 2-3
Entering text 2-4
Saving a Document 2-6
To create each separate table of contents and its unique page
numbering scheme, follow these steps:
- Create the table of contents entries for the first table of
contents by preceding each entry with the hidden letter code
".c.".
- After you designate all of the table of contents entries, from the
Library menu, choose Table (Word 5.0) or from the Insert menu choose
Table of Contents (Word 5.5).
Word 5.5
- In the "Create Table of Contents from" field, choose Codes.
- Select the default code of "C".
- In the Page Numbers "Separate by" field, type ^t for the tab character and type the characters or
numbers you want to appear in front of each table of contents entry.
For example, to create the page numbering 1-1, 1-2, and so on, type
^t1-.
- Click the OK button or press ENTER.
Word 4.0 and 5.0
- In the "from" field, select Codes.
- Select the default code of "C" in the "index code" field.
- In the "entry/page number separated by" field, type ^t for the tab character and enter the characters
or
numbers you want to appear in front of each table of contents entry.
For example, to create the page numbering 1-1, 1-2, and so on, enter
^t1-.
- Press ENTER.
If you create each new table of contents for the next chapter or
section of the document, repeat steps 1 and 2 with the following
changes:
- If you create entries for each new table of contents in step 1, use
a different letter code each time. You can use any letter codes except
i, g, d or l.
- Enter the new letter code for the next table of contents in the
Library Table "index code" field (Word 4.0 and 5.0) or the Insert
Table of Contents "codes" field (Word 5.5). For example, if the
entries for the next table of contents are preceded by a letter code
of ".e.", type e.
- Enter the new characters or numbers to appear in front of the new
table of contents. For example, to create the page numbering scheme
2-1, 2-2, and so on, in the second table of contents, enter ^t2- in the "index/entry separated by" field
(Word 4.0 and 5.0) or the "Page numbers separate by" field (Word 5.5).
Word creates each new table of contents at the end of the document. A
division break (Word 5.0) or section break (Word 5.5) separates each
table of contents.
