ID: Q78794

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c

SUMMARY

If you attempt to open a file in Windows Notepad that is included in a Microsoft Word for Windows document while that Word document is open, a sharing violation occurs. If the Word document is not open, this error does not occur. This problem occurs when the file is linked and when it is not linked.

This problem was corrected in Word version 6.0 for Windows.

MORE INFORMATION

Most other Microsoft applications (for example, Windows Write, Works for Windows, and Word for MS-DOS) allow you to open the included file in Windows Notepad while the Word document is open without receiving a sharing violation.

Workaround

Close the Word for Windows document, and open the text file in Notepad. You can then edit and save the Notepad file. If the text file was linked, the Word document will update without generating a sharing violation.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. From the Word for Windows Insert menu, choose File.

  2. Select a text file, and check the Link to File option (select the Link option in version 1.x), and choose the OK button.

Note: Choosing Link is not necessary to reproduce the problem.

  3. Start Windows Notepad.

  4. From the Notepad File menu, choose Open, and select the text file used in step 2. A share violation errors.
