Err Msg: "Insufficient Memory" in Layout when Printing

ID: Q78818

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for MS-DOS, versions 5.0, 5.5, 6.0

SUMMARY

The error message in version 5.0 of Microsoft Word for MS-DOS:

Insufficient Memory
or in version 5.5 of Word:
There is not Enough Memory to Perform This Action
or in verison 6.0 of Word:
Word's memory full - cannot perform this action
can be caused by a large number of side-by-side paragraphs when page layout mode, print preview, printing, or a combination of these features are used. A large number of side-by-side paragraphs on a single page, regardless of how they are formatted, can also cause this error. Using expanded memory does not have any effect on this problem. Changing the format of the document to have fewer side-by-side paragraphs on a single page should correct this problem.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

Note: This procedure may cause an unrecoverable error in Word 5.5.

  1. In Word 5.5, 6.0, choose Layout from the the View menu. In Word 5.0, press ALT+F4 to turn on layout mode.

  2. Create five paragraphs containing six characters each. Format them as side by side to appear on one line as shown below:

          test1 test1 test1 test1 test1

  3. Duplicate these five paragraphs on subsequent lines until you have 38 lines in version 5.0 for a total of 190 paragraphs or 27 lines in versions 5.5, 6.0 for a total of 135 paragraphs.

  4. Attempt to use print preview by typing CTRL+F9 in Word. If you do not have graphics capability, attempt to print by choosing Print from the File menu and pressing ENTER in Word 5.5 or 6.0, or by pressing ESC and choosing Print Printer in Word 5.0.

Note: The addition of more characters to each paragraph will make the problem occur with fewer total side-by-side paragraphs.
