Word: Information on Genius Mice and Software Drivers

ID: Q78820

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for MS-DOS, versions 5.0, 5.5, 6.0

SUMMARY

A Genius model GM6 mouse running in Mouse Systems mode with GMOUSE.COM or GMOUSE.SYS version 9.04 loaded may freeze in the middle of a Microsoft Word for MS-DOS version 5.0 screen immediately after Word 5.0 is started. This problem can be resolved by running the Genius model GM6 mouse in Microsoft Mouse mode and by updating to version 9.06 of the Genius mouse software.

As of November 1991, the latest Genius mouse driver software is version 9.06. Genius technical support recommends that users of Microsoft Word versions 5.0 and 5.5 contact the Genius technical support bulletin board at (714) 923-8454 to download the latest Genius mouse driver software. As of November 1991, the G-RUNME.EXE file is a self-extracting, executable file that contains the Genius mouse drivers GMOUSE.SYS and GMOUSE.COM.

MORE INFORMATION

The Genius model GM6 mouse is a three-button mouse that can operate in two different modes -- "Mouse Systems" mode and "Microsoft Mouse" mode. To switch the Genius model GM6 mouse to Microsoft Mouse mode, you must hold down one of the mouse buttons while the computer system is booting and the Genius mouse driver software is being loaded. If no mouse button is held down when the computer system boots, the Genius mouse will be operating in Mouse Systems mode (the default).

Later versions of the Genius mouse, called the "D Series" and "F Series" mice, contain a switch on the bottom that sets their operating mode. Setting the switch to position 2 causes these mice models to operate in Microsoft Mouse mode. Setting the switch to position 3 causes them to operate in Mouse Systems operating mode.

The Microsoft Mouse driver software shipped with Microsoft Word versions 5.0 and 5.5 should not be loaded on computer systems that contain a Genius mouse.
