WinWord: Using the Hewlett-Packard Fax with Word for Windows

SYMPTOMS

When using the \h switch in the SYMBOL field in Microsoft Word for Windows, the result of the field appears truncated on the screen; however, it does print correctly.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Word for Windows listed above. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

From the File menu, choose New, and choose the OK button. Insert the following field:
{symbol 169 \f symbol \s 22 \h}

From the View menu, make sure Field Codes is not selected.

The line spacing does not adjust on the screen, therefore the field result is cut in half. When you print the file, the line spacing is adjusted, and the symbol prints correctly.

The \h switch controls the line spacing of the SYMBOL field. The \h switch tells Word for Windows to ignore the font size specified by the \s switch. In the above example, the "symbol 169" indicates a heart symbol in 22-point Symbol font. The \h switch tells Word for Windows not to adjust the line spacing to account for the 22-point heart symbol.
