-
Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Word for Windows, if you insert a paragraph return using
the Edit Replace command while working in outline view, the resulting
two paragraphs promote together in outline view, as if they were still
one paragraph.
WORKAROUND
When breaking a paragraph into two separate paragraphs, press the
ENTER key; or, if you use the Edit Replace command to insert the
paragraph mark, first verify you are not in outline view.
Steps to Reproduce Problem
Word for Windows Version 2.0
- From the File menu, choose New, and choose the OK button. On one
line in the new document, type the following:
This is para1 - This is para2
- From the View menu, choose Outline.
- From the Edit menu, choose Replace.
- In the Find What field, type - (SPACEBAR, HYPHEN, SPACEBAR).
- In the Replace With field, type ^p.
- Choose the Replace button, then choose the Cancel button.
- Position the insertion point in the first paragraph.
- Choose the Promote Heading Level button on the outline bar (or
press ALT+SHIFT+LEFT ARROW) to apply the Heading 1 style to the first
paragraph.
Word for Windows Version 1.x
- From the File menu, choose New, and choose the OK button. On one
line in the new document, type the following:
This is para1 - This is para2
- From the View menu, choose Outline.
- From the Edit menu, choose Replace.
- In the Search for field, type - (SPACEBAR, HYPHEN, SPACEBAR).
- In the Replace With field, type ^p.
- Choose the OK button.
- Position the insertion point in the first paragraph.
- Choose the Promote Heading Level button on the outline bar (or
press ALT+SHIFT+LEFT ARROW) to apply the Heading 1 style to the first
paragraph.
Only the first paragraph should be promoted; the second paragraph
should retain the Normal style. Word for Windows promotes both
paragraph 1 and paragraph 2, even though they display as two separate
paragraphs.
