Editing Links to Word for Windows Documents

ID: Q81934

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c

SUMMARY

If you link a Microsoft Word for Windows document to another Word document, when you choose Links from the Edit menu, the Open Source button and the Automatic and Manual option buttons for updating are unavailable if the field containing the link is currently selected.

This problem occurs because the link to a Word document creates an INCLUDE field, not a LINK field. These options are available when you link a Microsoft Excel version 3.0 spreadsheet (which creates a LINK field).

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. From the File menu, choose New, and choose the OK button.

  2. From the View menu, verify that Field Codes has a check mark beside it. If it does not, choose Field Codes.

  3. From the Insert menu, choose File, and select the Link to File check box. Select a file to insert, and choose the OK button.

  4. Select the field. From the Edit menu, select Links.

The Automatic and Manual options buttons for updating are unavailable, as is the Open Source button.

For more information on linking files, search for "Linking documents" using the Help menu.
