Word: Searching For and Replacing Extended Characters

To search for or replace extended characters with number codes that have ASCII values less than 32 in Microsoft Word for MS-DOS version 5.5, use the following instructions:

  • From the Edit menu, choose Search or Replace, and enter the extended character in the Text to Search For box by typing a caret symbol (SHIFT+6) followed by the corresponding ASCII number code. For example, to search for the extended character with the ASCII number code 15, type ^15 in the Text to Search For box.


To search for or replace extended characters with number codes that have ASCII values greater than or equal to 32 in Word 5.5, use the following instructions:

  • From the Edit menu, choose Search or Replace. Hold down the ALT key while you type the appropriate ASCII number code on the numeric keypad in the Text to Search For box.


Word Versions 4.0 and 5.0

In Microsoft Word for MS-DOS versions 4.0 and 5.0, you can search for and replace words containing characters from the IBM extended character set. To do this, choose Search or Replace, and enter the extended character in the Search "text:" or Replace "text:" field by holding down the ALT key and typing the appropriate ASCII number code on the numeric keypad. Unlike Word 5.5, Word versions 4.0 and 5.0 access all the extended characters with the use of the ALT+Keypad combination.

Searching and Replacing ACSII Value 0 (The Null Character)

In all versions of Word for MS-DOS, searching for and/or replacing the null character (ASCII code 0 [zero]) is not allowed. This is the only character that you cannot search for or replace.
