WinWord: Low Memory Message When Pasting Excel Worksheet Row

ID: Q84135

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c

SUMMARY

If you copy or cut a Microsoft Excel worksheet row that you selected by clicking the row heading and try to paste the row into a Word for Windows document, you receive the following error message:

Word Version 6.0

There is insufficient memory. Save the document now.

Word Version 2.x

Low memory. Save the document now.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do not use the row selection feature in Excel to copy rows that you want to paste into Word for Windows. Select only those columns and cells that you want to copy.

MORE INFORMATION

The maximum number of columns allowed in a Word for Windows table is 31. If you select an Excel worksheet row by clicking the row heading, you select the entire row, from column A to column IV. An entire row contains 256 columns; therefore, the low memory error message displays when you try to paste the row into Word.

When you choose the OK button in the error message dialog box, Word pastes only the columns it can accommodate.
