UAE or GP Fault When Saving from WinWord as Text with Layout

The information in this article applies to:
-
Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
SYMPTOMS
When a Word 2.x, 6.0, or 6.0a document is saved as Text With Layout or MS-
DOS Text With Layout format, a general protection (GP) fault or
unrecoverable application error (UAE) error may be received, and you may be
forced to exit Word.
CAUSE
This problem may occur either because the original Word document you are
attempting to save is damaged, or due to a problem with the Text With
Layout converter. All known problems with the Text With Layout converter
were addressed with the release of Word 6.0 for Windows, but some
previously unidentified causes may remain.
WORKAROUNDMethod 1: You can verify whether your original Word document is corrupt and
possibly avoid this problem by completing the following steps:
- Save the original Word document as Rich Text Format (RTF)
with a new name.
- Open the RTF file into a new document window, and resave as a
Word document with a new name so as to not overwrite the
original Word file.
- Attempt to save this document as Text With Layout.
Method 2: You can recover your document text to be reformatted and then
saved as text with layout.
- Select (highlight) all text in the original Word document with
the exception of the last paragraph mark at the end of the
file. From the Edit menu, choose Copy.
- From the File menu, choose New, choose OK to create a new
document window, and choose Paste from the Edit menu.
- Attempt to save the document as Text With Layout.
Method 3: One known problem cause in Word 2.x was the existence of hidden
text within a table cell. To remove this possible cause, choose
Select All from the Edit menu and remove the hidden text format
prior to saving as Text With Layout. This problem is addressed in
Word 6.0 for Windows.
Method 4: The most common cause of a UAE or GP fault when saving as Text
with Layout from Word 2.0c was the existence of a font size
smaller than 12 point in your Word document. All known instances
of this problem are addressed in Word 6.0.
By default, the Text With Layout converter allows for 10
characters per inch (cpi) when calculating line length for an
output text file. For example, the default left and right margin
settings in Word are 1.25 inches and the default page width is
8.5 inches. This leaves 6 inches of horizontal printable space.
In this case, the amount of printable space multiplied by 10
characters per inch indicates that a maximum of 60 characters
will be allowed to appear on a single line in an output text file
by default.
In some cases, if your Word document contains a font or
combination of small fonts that allow a greater overall number of
characters to appear on a single line than the Text With Layout
converter is prepared to allow when exporting to that format, the
converter may fail while attempting to calculate where to break
lines. To work around this problem, increase the characters per
inch allowed by the Text With Layout converter. To do so in Word
2.x, complete the following steps:
- Start Word for Windows. From the Tools menu, choose Options,
and select the WIN.INI category.
- In the Application box, select "MSWord Text Converters."
- In the Application box, select the MSWord Text Converters
suboption "TextLytConv."
- In the Startup Options box, select "PointSize=12."
- In the Setting box, change the number 12 to 10.
- Choose the Set button.
- Choose the Close button.
- Exit and restart Word. (If you are running with Windows
version 3.0, quit and restart Windows prior to restarting
Word).
Now when you save documents in Text With Layout format, the
converter will allow 12 cpi rather than the default setting of 10
cpi, and the UAE or GP fault likely will no longer occur.
If this does not solve the problem, repeat steps 1-8 above, but
in step 5 change the number from 10 to 8. If this still does not
solve the problem, repeat the steps again and specify a smaller
value for the PointSize option each time until the UAE or GP
fault no longer occurs.
For more information on options for customizing the Word for Windows Text
With Layout converter and other converters, see the "Conversion Options"
section in the CONVINFO.DOC file located in your Word 2.x for Windows
program directory or run the EditConversionOptions macro available in the
CONVERT.DOT template in the MACROS subdirectory in your Word 6.0 for
Windows program directory.
