Envelopes Print Incorrectly on NEC SilentWriter 95

ID: Q95094

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c

SYMPTOMS

If you print an envelope from Microsoft Word for Windows to a NEC SilentWriter 95 using the Create Envelope command, the address text may be truncated, the envelope may print in the wrong orientation, or you may receive a general protection (GP) fault.

STATUS

NEC has confirmed this to be a problem with the NEC SilentWriter 95 printer driver for the Microsoft Windows operating system version 3.1. There is a new version of the driver available from NEC, N95f311.WPD dated 10/7/92, which corrects the problem. This problem was corrected in Word version 7.0 for Windows 95.

MORE INFORMATION

When you print envelopes using the Create Envelope command in Word for Windows, the NEC SilentWriter 95 printer driver does not correctly rotate the printable region to landscape orientation. Consequently, printing begins .5 inch from the left edge of the envelope and ends 4.5 inches from the left edge of the envelope.

If you use this printer driver to print from version 1.x of Word for Windows, you may receive the following error message

Margins set outside printable area of page.
Microsoft tested the following two versions of the NEC SilentWriter 95 printer driver:

   N95_2010.WPD 4510 12-08-91
   N95_2010.WPD 4522 02-10-92
Both versions exhibited the behavior described above.

If you are using the .WPD file dated 12-08-91, the envelope will be printed in landscape orientation; however, the right side of the text will be truncated near the middle of the envelope.

If you are using the .WPD file dated 02-10-92, the envelope will be printed in portrait orientation; a manual feed prompt is not displayed on the printer when you use this printer driver.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do one of the following:

  • Use the QMS PS-820 Windows driver. With the QMS 820 driver, the upper and lower trays are reversed; therefore, you must select the upper tray when you want to use the lower tray and vice versa.

  • -or-

  • If you are using Windows version 3.0, NEC suggests selecting the None option button under Margins in the printer driver Options dialog box. To set this option:

    1. Select the Printers icon in the Windows Control Panel.

    2. Select the NEC SilentWriter 95 printer and choose the Setup button.

    3. Choose the Options button.

    4. Under Margins, select the None option button, and choose the OK button twice. Choose the Close button, then close the Control Panel.
