WordArt: GP Fault Occurs with Long, Slanted Text Strings

ID: Q96223

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft WordArt, version 1.0
  • Microsoft Publisher versions 1.0, 1.0a
  • Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, version 3.0
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1

SYMPTOMS

If you try to embed a WordArt object in Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows or Microsoft Publisher, you may receive the following error message:

Word Art caused a General Protection Fault in module WORDART.EXE at 0001:46A3

CAUSE

This will occur if the WordArt object has all the following characteristics:

  • A single line of text has more than 31 characters.

  • The Point Size option is set to anything other than Best Fit.

  • The Style is set to Slant Up (More).

This error message occurs as soon as you select all three of these characteristics; it appears before you press OK.

RESOLUTION

You can avoid this problem by pressing the Apply button after you change the Style option to Slant Up (More) but before you select a point size (or by pressing the Apply button after you select a point size but before you change the Style to Slant Up [More]).

MORE INFORMATION

This problem does not occur when you embed an object in Microsoft PowerPoint 2.0 for Windows, Windows Write, or Word for Windows; nor it does not occur if you copy the WordArt object from one of these applications into PowerPoint 3.0 or Publisher and then edit the object.
