Error Message: "Word Cannot Find the Font File..."

ID: Q96749

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for MS-DOS, version 6.0

SUMMARY

When you use the Insert Symbol command, you may receive the error message, "Word cannot find the font file <fontname>.TTF". This error may occur because the .PRF file for the selected printer does not point to the correct location of the font file.

To correct this problem, either correct the path listed in the .PRF file, or move the TrueType font file to the location specified in the .PRF file. After you have done this, you must force Word to re-read the .PRF file. You can do this in either of the following ways:

  • Exit Word, then restart Word.

  • In Printer Setup, choose a different printer driver. Then, return to Printer Setup and reselect the printer driver you originally were using.

MORE INFORMATION

When you install a printer driver and choose to have TrueType font support added to it, a .PRF file is created with the same name as the printer driver. This file contains the names and location of the TrueType fonts for which you are adding support. Word loads this list upon startup and when you select a new printer driver from the File Printer Setup dialog box. If Word tries to use these fonts but cannot find them, the font will be marked as unavailable. Word will refresh this list if you select a new driver or if you exit and restart Word.

Refer to TRUETYPE.DOC for information on editing the .PRF file. TRUETYPE.DOC is one of the informational files installed with Word and is located in the Word directory.
