WordPerfect Does Not Support Opening Fast-Saved WinWord Files

SUMMARY

According to WordPerfect Corporation, Word for Windows documents that are saved while the Allow Fast Save check box is selected are not successfully imported into WordPerfect version 5.1 or 5.2 for Windows. This is not an issue with MS-DOS-based versions of WordPerfect because those versions do not support direct translation of Word for Windows documents.

Our tests indicate that "fast-saved" Word documents are automatically recognized by WordPerfect but are displayed as garbage text.


WORKAROUNDS

To work around this problem, WordPerfect suggests opening the document in Word for Windows and resaving the file without the Allow Fast Save option selected.

The best way to convert documents to and from WordPerfect and retain formatting is to use Word for Windows' own ability to read and write WordPerfect format. When you want to use a Word for Windows document in WordPerfect for Windows, save the document in WordPerfect format from within Word for Windows by using the following steps:

  1. From the File menu, choose Save As.


  2. In the Save As dialog box, specify WordPerfect 5.1 (*.DOC) format in the Save File As Type box.


  3. Type an output filename and then choose the OK button to convert the file.


You can now directly open the document in WordPerfect, regardless of whether or not the document has been "fast-saved" in Word for Windows.
