WD97: Using Html.dot as WordMail Template May Cause Problems

SYMPTOMS

When you create a new mail message, or open an existing mail message, Word may stop responding or you may receive the following error message:

Web page authoring features are not available when Word is running inside another application.


CAUSE

This problem occurs when you are using Word as your e-mail editor and you have selected Html.dot as the WordMail template.


WORKAROUND

Use a different template when you are using Word as your e-mail editor.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.


MORE INFORMATION

To change the template when you are using Word as your e-mail editor, follow these steps:

  1. Start Microsoft Outlook.


  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.


  3. Click the E-mail tab.


  4. Click the Template button, and then click to select one of the following templates (or a custom template you have created):


  5. Email
    Flame
    Hightech
    Midnight
    Ocean
    Rain
    Urgent
  6. Click Select, and then click OK.


NOTE: Do not move, delete, or rename the Html.dot template. If you do, Word may not be able to locate the template when you use the HTML features in Word and will return the following error message:
Word cannot find the required file: Html.dot.

Please rerun Setup and make sure Web Page Authoring (HTML) is selected.
