XL2000: "File May Be Damaged or Missing" Error Opening PivotTable Published from Excel List

SYMPTOMS
When you open a Web page in Microsoft Internet Explorer that contains a Microsoft Office PivotTable list, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
An error occurred while trying to open the data file
"./Published filename_files/Excel filename_9225_cachedata.xml".
The file may be damaged or missing. Consult the creator of the Web page.
0x800a65c7: The name Field name contains invalid characters.
where Published filename is the name of the Web page that you are trying to open, Excel filename is the name of the Excel file used to publish the Web page, and Field name is the name of the field that contains an invalid character.
This error message may appear more than once. When the Web page loads, the PivotTable displays the following error message:
Unable to connect to data
CAUSE
This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
- The PivotTable list was published using a PivotTable stored on a
Microsoft Excel worksheet.
-and-
- One of the field names in the list that was used to create the
Excel PivotTable contains a period (.).
WORKAROUND
To work around the problem, follow these steps:
- Open the Excel workbook that was used to publish the Office PivotTable.
- Remove the period from the offending field name in the list that was
used to create the PivotTable.
- Select a cell in the Excel PivotTable that was used as the source for
the Office PivotTable.
- On the Data menu, click Refresh Data.
- If you receive the following message
The Refresh Data operation changed the PivotTable Report.
click OK. You need to add the changed field back to your
PivotTable. To do this, drag the field
from the PivotTable toolbar to the appropriate drop area on the
PivotTable.
- On the File menu, click Save as Web Page.
Click Publish.
- In the Choose list, click PivotTable. Click to select
the Add interactivity with check box.
- Type the name of your file in the File name box, and then click Publish.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Office PivotTable Component, version 9.0.
