XL2000: Workbook Loads Slowly the First Time That it is Opened

ID: Q210162

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you open a file in Microsoft Excel 2000 for the first time, the file may take more time than normal to load.

Also, when you close the file, you may receive the following prompt:

Do you want to save the changes you made to <Filename>?

Microsoft Excel recalculates formulas when opening files last saved by an earlier version of Excel.

where <filename> is the name of the file you are closing.

CAUSE

The first time you open a file that was last saved in Excel 97, the file is completely recalculated.

NOTE: If Excel is in manual calculation mode, the file is not recalculated.

RESOLUTION

When you save the workbook in Excel 2000, the workbook will take less time to open.

REFERENCES

For more information about Excel fully recalculating workbooks when they are opened for the first time, click Microsoft Excel Help on the Help menu, type "About the way Excel recalculates workbooks that were created in earlier versions" in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topic.

Note: This help topic incorrectly states that all workbooks created in an earlier version of Excel will be fully recalculated when they are opened. Only workbooks that were last saved in Excel 97 are fully recalculated.
